Project overview

The Young Bankers Club is a program created by Fifth Third Bank to educate young children about personal finance. The client wanted to modernize their course and turn it into a fully interactive E-learning game to spark young interest in finance. The course consisted of 8 fully animated 45 minute levels with finance exercises sprinkled throughout.

The course was developed using Articulate Storyline and designed/animated using the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite.

UX/UI Considerations
This UX journey was unique because our main users would be children from 6-12 years old. Our target market was inner city children who know little to nothing about finance. We started by organizing the lessons we wanted to teach and breaking them up into different modules. We started by visiting some schools and talking to a few classes about how we could keep them engaged in a game about finance, which is very math heavy and typically would be difficult to keep the attention of children. We discovered that the children reacted very positively to in-game insentives, such as unlocking new avatar options and winning awards that they could share with their friends. We also discovered that many of the users wanted an option for a hint to help reduce problem solving anxiety.

We did three rounds of user testing before launch for different age levels of the course. We also used a feedback module on our LMS for the users to send suggestions for future modules or detail any areas where they struggled.

Level 1 Play-Through

Explore New Locations!

Each level starts out at a new, unique, finance related location where the students will get the opportunity to learn about why the location is important. Locations include 5/3rd Bank itself, the U.S. Mint, the U.S. Treasury, the NY Stock Exchange, Fort Knox, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the internet.

Search for Clues!

Every location the students visit includes a "clue hunt". The students must click around the interiors of the locations to look for clues to open the vault portal and find Max's fortune. But watch out! Some objects will try to trick you when you click them. Every time the students find the clue, they must solve finance problems to unlock the code to the vault.

Unlock New Avatars!

Every level the student progresses unlocks new avatars. At the beginning of each level, the students are given the opportunity to choose their avatar. The avatar displays at the bottom left corner of the screen where the level bar tracks their progress. The levels get harder, and the avatars get cooler!

Hands on Learning!

Every module includes lecture sections that visually walk the students through basic finance skills that they will need when they grow up. Every clue the students find will take them through a series of real life finance scenarios, exercises, and problems that will give them the practice they need to succeed. Each level has a theme, from basic taxes and budgeting, to balancing stock portfolios and diversifying investments! This E-learning program gives the students a comprehensive crash course in personal finance.
